Retiring Exchange 5.5
with Exchange 2003 SP1 Tools
The next issue is
making sure your Exchange 5.5 servers the most recent DS/IS
consistency checker hotfix installed. When you run the Exchange
Tasks Wizard to migrate a mailbox it checks each
server to confirm that this hotfix is installed. If one of the 5.5
servers does not have it installed, even if you aren?t migrating
mailboxes from it, the wizard will abort. For more information and
to download this hotfix goto:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836489. This hotfix ensures
that public folder permissions are updated correctly when mailboxes
are moved across sites. After applying this hotfix, and before
migrating any mailboxes you should run the consistency checker on
each 5.5 server. This needs to be done from the Exchange 5.5 Admin
tool. To do this open up the properties of the server, in the 5.5
admin tool, and click the Advanced tab and then click the
Consistency Adjuster. Check all four options and review the
application log for any critical issues.
If your
organization uses public folders you are also going to need to
replicate any public folder data from the 5.5 servers to the new
2003 servers. That can be done manually by adding the new 2003
servers as replicas to each public folder or by using the pfMigrate
tool, which is included with the Exchange Server Deployment Tools,
to automate the process. This tool was updated in SP1 to support
setting up replicas across sites, using the
/sc
switch. pfMigrate can be used to add the new Exchange 2003 servers
as a replicate for all public folders on an Exchange 5.5 server and
later to remove the legacy 5.5 servers as replicates. See
KB843107 for more information on pfMigrate. pfMigrate can be
run from the Exchange Deployment Wizard, under Consolidate Sites in
Exchange Mixed Mode ? Phase 1 and Phase 3. The Exchange Deployment
Wizard can be download from:
