Disaster Recovery (Backup/Restore)
(Part 2)
In
part 1 of this article, I covered using Windows NT Backup
to backup Exchange on an ad-hoc and scheduled basis. ?This second part will cover using
Recovery Storage Groups to restore and merge the restored data into
mailboxes.
Restoring an Exchange Database Using a Recovery
Group
Recovery Store Groups (RSG) in Exchange 2003 allow Exchange
administrators the ability to restore an Exchange database to a temporary
location without taking users off-line.? Once the database has been restored
mailbox data in the recovery group can then be merged back the current mailboxes.?
This recovery method is normally used when a user deleted an item several weeks
or months ago and needs to retrieve it. RSGs can also be used if the Exchange
database file has become corrupted or lost. This recovery method is called a ?Dial-Tone
Recovery?. In a scenario where a database has become corrupt, a new
empty database should be created to allow users to return to work, and a RSG is
used to restore or backfill the mailbox data from a previous backup. For more
information on a Dial-tone recovery, see Microsoft?s article:
