CommVault Galaxy
Reader comments compiled by Mitch Tulloch
Generally Backup Exec, but we are moving now toward CommVault (Galaxy). It's quite different to other backup systems, but very smart. This is definitely a looker for medium, large enterprises. I'd say maybe some small, but it works better with Tape Loaders.

Yes, I have an NFR of Commvault Galaxy and have played around with it a bit, seems pretty impressive. Have any of you tried it in a production environment, or do you know anybody who has that I could contact for some feedback?

Mitch

As yet, I cannot! We are running it ourselves, but I'd hardly use us as a recommendation. We have just signed up as the Agents for Commvault Galaxy in WA, and have a number of large orgs looking at it! If you really want, I can contact Commvault and get you a reference. I'm sure they would be eager to do this.

Colin

At the MEC in Dallas there was a session from Commvault. MS uses it in its dogfood lab. Some of my co-workers used Legato Networker for a client once as they had some demands. Legato is quite customizable .. but it is a Unix tool with a Windows shell and it requires a lot of scripts.

Never managed to get it fully functioning in a live situation though .. even with the help of Legato.

Over the last year we have looked at several solutions for backup and restore of Exchange databases. Almost every solutions that we looked at offers a great interface for mailboxes and private stores. But they all seem to forget the Public Store.

The company I work for has a large public store that holds thousands and thousands of messages. Up to now we have NOT succeeded in finding a product that is capable of a simple restore of single messages of folders. It's always the "all or nothing method".

We have been in contact with CommVault, they have a great solution for mailboxes and privates store, but they are still working on a solution for Public Folders (for over a year now).

I have trouble understanding the Microsoft strategy. On one hand they tell you to store everything you have in the Public Folders, on the other hand the rely on external partners for a backup- and restore solution that simply is not available. It looks like they are avoiding the subject.....

Any recommendations?
