Renaming your Active Directory Domain

Domain Rename Steps:

1-     Raise forest & domain functional level to 2003 level

Open Active Directory Domains and Trusts.

In the console tree, right-click the Domain node, and then click Raise Domain Functional Level.

In Select an available Domain functional level, click Windows Server 2003, and then click Raise.

 

 

 In the console tree, right-click the Active Directory Domains and Trusts node, and then click Raise Forest Functional Level.

Click Raise.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Caution

If you have or will have any domain controllers running Windows NT 4.0 and earlier or Windows 2000, then do not raise the forest functional level to Windows Server 2003. Once the forest functional level has been set to Windows Server 2003, it cannot be changed back to Windows 2000.

 

2-     Setup a Control Station.

 in this step; you will set up a single computer as the administrative control station for the entire domain renames operation. All the steps in the procedures described in this section are performed and controlled from this computer.

·         Prepare a member Computer with windows 2003 standard, enterprise, datacenter edition.

·         Install windows support tools

·         Install the domain rename utility Click download to go to the download link

3-     Open the command prompt browse to " C:\Program Files\Microsoft Domain Rename Tools"

4-     Run "Rendom /list."

5-     Copy the "domainlist.xml" file to "domainlistold.xml"

6-     Edit the list file "Domainlist.xml" with the new domain name in the following sections (highlighted with blue):

Never attempt to edit the GUID number under any circumstances editing he GUID may corrupt the AD database and domain
